JFE Steel in the World Steel Industry

During the past 20 years up to 1999, world steel production has been staying, at around 700 million metric tons a year. However, production reached the 800 million tons level in 2000, and then broke through 900 million tons in 2002. Steel demand is continuing to rise in the 21st century. JFE Steel is a major integrated steel producer that imports raw materials, such as iron ore and coal, and produces a complete range of high quality products to meet the diverse needs of customers not only in Japan, but throughout the world, especially in the Asian region including China and South Korea.

West Japan Works

West Japan Works is the world's largest and most advanced integrated steel manufacturing facilities. With an area of approximately 25.1 million square meters. the total plant is roughly 550 times the size of Tokyo Dome stadium. It boasts continuous, synchornized processes for ironmaking, steelmaking, and rolling, and a production system that has the flexibility and efficiency to meet the needs of the most demanding customers. As the core steelworks for JFE steel, West Japan Works will continue to be at the forefront of the world's steel industry.

Chita Works

Chita Works specializes in the production of steel pipes and tubes, boasting the most varieties of steel pipes produced at any single plant in the world. It also has advanced research facilities which continue to develop innovative, cutting-edge technologies for pipe production and material.

Steel Research Laboratory

JFE¡¯s Steel Research Laboratory is one of the largest of its kind in the global steel industry. The Laboratory promotes product development by the pursuit of the possibility of steel and innovation in process technology. It also applies its technology to such related areas as the chemical business and the environmental systems business. The Laboratory has research facilities at all main production sites, including Chiba, Keihin, Kurashiki, Fukuyama, and Chita.

East Japan Works

East Japan Works is an urban-type steel mill comprising Keihin Works, which was Japan¡¯s first private steelworks and is located in the Tokyo-Yokohama (Keihin) area, and Chiba Works, the first integrated steel mill built in Japan after World War II. As it strives to meet the increasingly sophisticated and diverse demands of its customers, East Japan Works has also continued to expand its site and improve its layout to achieve higher effieiciency and a more harmonious relationship with the surrounding urban environment. Today, it boasts stat-of-the-art steelmaking technologies and equipment. And is also actively involved in environmental conservation. East Japan Works has a strict resource and energy conservation program in place and is a key player in recycling waste plastics as blast furnace feed. Together with JFE¡¯s stainless steel plant at Nishinomiya. East Japan Works is a leading example of how urban steel mills of the 21st century can live in harmony with the environment and their communities.
